Following the coast
Dutch coastal shipping over the years
Omschrijving
In the last 75 years, Dutch coastal shipping has largely created the image of a merchant marine. It started with peat shipping from the east of the Netherlands to the coasts of the former Zuyder Sea and reached over 1,000 ships at its peak in the mid-fifties of twentieth century shipping.
This book follows the ships from 1930 until the present, and shows that the traditional coaster gave way to ships that became bigger and bigger. The scale increase made the word 'coastal shipping' obsolete to a certain extent, as there were only a few coasters that had permits for only restricted navigation. A better term would be 'short-haul trade' as almost all ships had unlimited navigation permits and swarmed the globe.
In black & white and colour.
